What will you stop doing to get to partner?

Every time I run a workshop for delegates, I will always hear the immortal words:

I don’t have any time to take on more stuff

Yes, I do believe you. It’s not just when you go on a workshop that you find yourself with ‘more stuff’ to do. It’s the same with you and your career progression. Progressing your career means starting to take on more ‘stuff’. So, how are you going to find the room to do all the new stuff that you need to take on to progress through to partner? When I mean new stuff, I am talking about:

  • Management or leadership responsibility
  • Business development responsibility – after all, your very own client portfolio doesn’t suddenly appear overnight

There is a simple solution here. You are going to have to stop doing something. Radical, I know. If you want to start to focus on using social media to generate clients, which face-to-face networking event will you stop going to? Or, what work will you delegate down to the more junior professionals in your team? Or can you meet someone after work, rather than taking time out of your working day for that ‘keeping up the relationship’ meeting.

What will you stop doing?
