Today my son was man of the match at his football tournament. I was absolutely gutted. I’d missed his moment of glory whilst I spent time working away at a conference in Lisbon. By the time I fly in, he will be asleep and all I want to do is give him a big cuddle and get the low down from him after his moment of triumph. I can visualise his ear-to-ear grin when he was given the man of the match medal. I know how much it means to him – I also know how proud his coach was of his performance today. As I write this blog, I can feel the emotion welling up. I wasn’t there. I know that he had a very proud Granny and Grandpa there watching him. But, that’s not the same as if I had been there. It’s ironic that as the writer of ‘How to make partner and still have a life’, I missed a key moment in my son’s life. In fact, my mother seems to have got her fair share of these key moments, she also was there for his first steps while I was away at a training event. See a theme here? What about you? It’s Friday today. How much of your weekend are you going to spend working. What aspects of family life will you be missing out on? I bet you didn’t sign up as a parent not to be there for your kids, in both the good and bad times? How many magical moments with your kids have your nanny, parents or other half seen while you were at work? So, what are you going to do about it?
