Your partners are not looking for a ‘great’ senior associate or director as their next new partner. Just being a ‘great’ senior fee earner is NOT enough to be seen as the next one in line to make partner.
Your partners are looking for someone who thinks more like a business owner and leader of the business. In fact the skills that have made you a high-performing senior associate or senior manager can actively work against you at this stage!

- That it is not the firm’s responsibility to drive your development or career, it is your responsibility to drive your career.
- Business development needs to be part of your day job rather than something that you do when the workload is light
- You need to treat your practice like a business, not just a job to be done.
- Understand that if you do make partner, this where your partners will be offering you a chance to buy into the firm.
