Why is Delegation so important to your future career progression?

So how are you going to get everything done? Your day job, partner-level responsibilities and your own business and career development plans? The simple answer is, by delegating. To do that, you need people that you trust to delegate work to. This could be a fixed team of people or people who are helping you out on this one particular assignment.

If you are to have that 'trusted' group of people to delegate to, you need to be able to create a strong team beneath you. If you can't learn to delegate effectively, then wave goodbye to any ambitions you ever had about making partner.

How to delegate effectively

To become a master at delegating (so that you can free up your time to progress your career), you need to follow 6 steps:

Diarise planning time in your diary so that you can delegate work.

    Step 6

Check that the individual understands what is expected of them.

How to create a strong team beneath you

To create a high-performing team who you can trust and who trust and respect you, you need to adapt your role and you need to wear many hats, namely:

    Target setter

You need to set their purpose and targets and help them identify the plan to help achieve these.

    Facilitator

You need to work within the team to help everyone bond and trust each other.

    Coach and trainer

You need to act as the team coach (as well as coach to team members), to help them develop and behave at the level expected of them.

    Motivator

You need to work out what makes each individual team member tick and how you can help motivate them.

    Conflict resolver

You need to resolve any conflicts as and when they appear and nip them in the bud before they become serious.
